MoneyWatch: Campaign Contributions and Expenditures Across All Health-Related Measures for 2005

Track who is contributing to the pro and con campaigns and how much.

Summary Analysis
The three health care related measures (Propositions 73, 78 and 79) raised a combined total of $87.7 million and spent $91.1 million during California's 2005 special election season. Combined with other propositions on the ballot, contributions and expenditures for the 2005 special election broke all records for total ballot measure spending in California.

Of the top ten contributors to the three health care-related initiative campaigns, all were pharmaceutical companies, and 94 percent were from out-of-state contributors. GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson and Johnson, Merck and Pfizer topped the charts, each with $9.84 million in contributions for Prop. 78 and against Prop. 79.

Prop. 78 supporters, who also opposed Prop. 79, collected and spent far more than other health initiative campaigns, with $78.1 million in total contributions and $81.2 million in total expenditures (excluding $3.2 million in contributions spent on a campaign other than Prop. 78 or Prop. 79). By contrast, Prop. 79 supporters collected and spent about $2.5 million, or about three percent of the $78.1 million contributed for Prop. 78 and against Prop. 79.

As the special election season progressed, campaign ads became increasingly frequent. In California's top five broadcast markets, TV viewers saw about 28,000 broadcast television ad spots for and against the three health-related initiatives.

Note: Contributions under $100 are not required for reporting to the Secretary of State and therefore all contributions are not itemized.
