Proposition 3 (hospital bonds) proponents raised almost $8 million through December 31, 2008, according to the February 2, 2009, campaign filing statements. In contrast, they collected $5.2 million for Prop. 61, a similar children’s hospital bond act in 2004. As was the case with Prop. 61, no campaign committees raised or spent money against Prop. 3.
The vast majority of Prop. 3 contributions are from eight California private, nonprofit children's hospitals. Each children's hospital contributed between $899,000 and $1.5 million. Proponents spent almost $7.2 million for TV ad airtime, petition circulation, legal fees, campaign consultants, and overhead.
